Prasad needs a forever home!

Prasad is a beautiful lab/shepherd/doberman mix (as far as we can tell!). He is about 1 year old, has had all his shots and has been neutered. He is crate trained, loves to play. He plays well with other dogs and gets along well with the cat he is living with. His foster owner works out of town a lot and would keep him otherwise for he is a wonderful companion.

2009 was so busy that this poor blogspot didn't get updated - my apologies for that... but in the next 2 weeks we are going to catch you up with all that happened. For now, let me say that we dealt with literally hundreds of animals. Dr. Sue Felser of Salazar Vet donated her time and vaccinations at 2 separate NNMFOA Vaccination Clinics. Because of her support and generosity more than 100 dogs and cats received free vaccinations, including rabies. New posts, pictures and great stories and news coming soon. So check back - you won't be disappointed!

Welcome to Fall in New Mexico! Animal Updates We've had a very busy summer. MamaJane, the cat who birthed four kittens on 12th July, and her kits have all moved on to new homes. The kitties rescued from the sofet have all been adopted. We have transferred many puppies to the puppy rescue in Colorado since our last update, bringing our total to between 50 & 60 this season. Once again , many thanks to Pat Steele for transporting and Kim & the Colorado Puppy Rescue for their incredible work. Rescued Dog Rescues Human! Missy the Weimeraner who was abandoned 4th of July weekend at the Questa laundromat has found her forever home in Angel Fire *** and what a match that one is!*** Missy has twice scared off a bear attempting to enter her home, via the doggy door, saving her human and other dog! Thank you Pam & Walter for providing a loving home for Missy. Donations Heartfelt thanks to the many of you who have made donations of supplies and money to us. Among these we have received some especially generous donations. PetAg, Inc., makers of supplies for animals, gave us a generous quantity of kitten and puppy formulas, BeneBac and nursing nipples. Looking for Homes We currently have four 9 week old kittens in need of homes. We also have 2 puppies in the group who came from in front of Walmart: a black lab mix male and shephard/lab female. They are about 3-4 months old. Dog Found by Highway On Friday, 29 August a shephard mix female was found in the San Luis/Jaroso, Colorado area walking alongside the road. She is about 2 yrs. old, well mannered, knows how to sit and shake. If you know who may have lost her or are intersted in meeting her for potential adoption if that should become necessary, please call Jane or jona @ 586-2488. "Toury" is looking for her family... Once again it will be held at The Furniture Barn (Jerry's Place). We are looking for volunteers to help as this will be our biggest sale yet. Please call one of us to sign up for a shift. This may be our last sale of the season as we only have storage space through the end of November. Do you have storage space you could donate? If so we may be able to continue the sale, as weather permits, throughout the winter. This has been our primary source of funds for purchasing vaccines, animal food and medical supplies and paying vet bills. Call suzanne @ 586-1862 or Holly @ 586-0784.

Spay/Neuter Clinic Thanks to Penny and Four Corners we will once again be hosting the state of the art portable clinic from Santa Fe Humane Society here in Questa on 20 September. Another busy season! We are looking for more foster and forever homes. Foster Cat Gives Birth! While we all work hard to make sure all animals in our care are spayed or neutered, occasionally we get one in that is so close to birthing that it's too late to prevent the birth of a litter. This is the case of the cat Holly is fostering for Stray Hearts (see earlier posting below). On the 12th of July she gave birth to 4 kittens. Mom and babies are healthy and are lucky that a caring person from Taos Pueblo brought mamacat in to Stray Hearts when she was found outside a building at the Pueblo. Mama Jane and her 4 children! All are in good health and quite content. Mama purrs a lot and babies are mewling and wiggling, nursing and sleeping... what a life! Tired but purring, Jane the mamacat rests with her kittens under the dresser in her foster home.

Meanwhile, in another room, the 3 other Stray Hearts fosters are growing rapidly! Holly holding a lovely bouquet of kittens!

Missy is in need of a home but until her forever home is found, we need to find another foster home for her as her current person will be going out of town this Thursday!

Thanks to all who helped with the sale last Saturday, 5th of July; great outreach and we may also have gotten some new volunteers. That night we got a call from Kristine at the laundromat. It seems someone from Kentucky had been doing their laundry, going around asking people if they wanted a dog... when Kristine came back from running an errand they were gone and the dog was locked in the Paloma Blanca Laundromat, scared and whining in the bathroom. (I say at least they didn't dump her on the road or in the woods); thanks to Kristine we have her in a foster home (thank you Jan!). Her ears needed major attention which she got today at Salazar Vet, thank you Dr. Tricia Albins. Holly named her Missy; she's Weimaraner, has had pups. Very sweet; even though the ear treatments are uncomfortable she hasn't growled or snapped. We scanned her, no chip. So, she is looking for a good home. Also, when I stopped at our sister organization and Taos' animal shelter, Stray Hearts, they had a cat just brought in in need of fostering. She is very sweet, may be pregnant. If you can provide her with a permanent or foster home she is temporarily being fostered by Holly. (Yay, Holly!)

Many thanks Our sale in June raised over $1,000! These funds have already been put to use for vet bills, vaccination orders, formula, animal food and medication. Thank you to those of you who donated items. A big thank you to Jerry for letting us have the sale at The Furniture Barn. Many thanks to the people who worked the sale: Gail, Holly, Joe, Pat, Patty and Suzanne. And, Thank You! to all of you who shopped and those of you who made extra donations!

Desperately seeking We have many needs but right now at the top of the list is storage space/unit for storing the items between sales. This would be, unless available for longer, until our sales season ends, app. October. All unsold items would then be donated to area charities. See below for our ongoing needs in the Want to help? section.

Animal updates

Feline friends The kittens shown on our last update have since been weaned and moved on. We currently have 3 other kittens (see pictures) whose mama disappeared. They were extricated from the soffet of a utility building thanks to Viola and James of the local Phillips station. Their donation is making it possible to care for them until weaned. One of them had an injury to it's side (healed well) and may be permanently blind in one injured eye. If so, we are in need of a permanent indoor home for it. (See picture in right column).

We also have need for an indoor home for a beautiful, long haired, orange and white young adult cat.

She is almost totally deaf but very able and snuggly; she is current on all vaccinations and spayed. Her owner is moving and needs a new home by mid July .

Canine friends The 4 and then 2 puppies being fostered by Holly have been moved to the adoption network in Colorado. Thank you Pat S. for your ongoing work to make that possible! Pepper, who had been in Gail's care for 3 years(!) found a wonderful forever home with a family who loves her and she loves them. Gail still has Petey, Maya and Gracey waiting for forever homes (see their pictures below).

We are once again holding our fundraising yard sale. This first sale of 2008 will be held in Questa on Saturday, the 14th of June, Questa Fiesta weekend. Location is on the main street, north end of town, at Jerry's business, The Furniture Barn (formerly Greystone Furniture). The sale will be from 9am to 4pm. Other people will also have tables set up with a donation of 25% of their day's receipts going to the group. If you would like to donate gently used articles (no clothing please) you can bring them between 8 and 9 am the day of the sale. If you would like more information please call Holly at 586-0784 or Suzanne at 586-1862. And, if you are able to help with the sale, please call! We are thinking of continuing to do the yard sale monthly but we need volunteers to do so. If we do continue we will also need: a trailer to transport the items; a storage space; folding tables. If you can help with any of these things, please let us know.
